Don was diagnosed with dementia in his late sixties. For years he lived at home with increasing help from his family and a paid homemaker.
When Don walked five miles in the middle of the night, his family knew it was time for him to live in a safer place. Don moved into his new home, a secure assisted living facility. Medicaid, and most of Don’s Social Security check, pay the cost.
Without Medicaid the family would not be able to afford to have Don live in a place that meets his daily needs and keeps him safe.
